You can use infinitives with the word WHY?
Why study? = Perché studiare?

Some examples of how to use Infinitives
Verbs can be used in their infinitive form in phrases such as
Mi piace mangiare! = I like eating/to eat
Mi piace chiacchierare! = I like chatting in person NOT online (chattare)(chiacchierare = to chat and/or gossip)
`E bello dormire fino a tardi = It’s nice to sleep in
Sarebbe bello uscire stasera = It would be nice to go out tonight

Vorrei + Infinitive
Vorrei + infinitive! = I would like + infinitive
Vorrei andare a Roma- I would like to go to Rome
Vorrei visitare Roma – I would like to visit Rome
Voglio + Infinitive
Voglio + infinitive! = I want + infinitive
Voglio uscire stasera = I want to go out tonight!
Dovrei studiare per l’esame ma preferisco chattare su facebook!
Dovrei + Infinitive
Dovrei + infinitive! = I should + infinitive
Dovrei studiare per l’esame MA … = I should study for the exam but …
Devo + Infinitive
Devo + infinitive! = I must/have to + infinitive
Devo studiare per l’esame d’italiano stasera!
Potrei + Infinitive

Potrei venire a casa tua stasera = I could come over tonight
Posso + Infinitive
Posso + infinitive! = I can/am able to + infinitive

Sarebbe + Adjective + Infinitive
Sarebbe bello uscire = It would be nice to go out
Sarebbe ideale festeggiare = It would be ideal to celebrate

chiamare al cell=to call on the mobile (cell short for cellulare
guardare film=To watch movies
parlare al cellulare=To talk on the mobile

Can you recognise a few more? How do you write …?
To swim = _______________ (nuotare)
To play music = _______________ (suonare)
To fly = _______________ (volare)
Have you noticed that in English, we write “TO…” before the verb
In Italian, this “TO…” is translated by a suffix, the last syllable in the verb.
This suffix always ends in ‘…-RE”
Some end in –are, others in –ere and lastly those with –ire
nuotare to swim ( It can also mean ‘Swimming’ depending on the context)
eg.
Swimming is fun – Nuotare è divertente
or I like to swim!= Mi piace nuotare!
suonare to play music/ Playing music
Let’s see how verbs work in Italian. Study the verb infinitives that finish with -are
This is a list that you should study and learn off by heart
More importantly however, you need to be able to put it into sentences.
Much like MATHS, the formula is great, learning it off by heart is great.
Reading through and studying the model examples is also great
But creating your own is the ultimate proof you have understood
Like DRIVING – the manual is great,
You can learn the road rules off by heart
You can sit in the passenger seat and observe
But until you drive – until you sit in the driver’s seat
You have yet to master the desired outcome – to drive!

You can also use this phrase with an infinitive
